UPDATE: United Power Steamboat Youth Camp deadline extended

FORT LUPTON -- United Power extended the deadline for scholarship and Steamboat Youth Camp applications to Feb. 6 because of the storm.

"We understand that several schools were planning on mailing out the application packets for students today, and the schools are closed due to the weather," said Heidi Storz, marketing and communication coordinator for United Power. "In addition, we don't want any parents or students trying to drive to our offices or the post office with the roads in their current condition."

Applications postmarked by the new deadline will be considered for all the relevant scholarship or camp opportunities. Call 303-637-1259 with questions.

Weld Re-8 schools closed for the day Friday because of the snowstorm that's pounding the Front Range and eastern plains.

The National Weather Service predicted 12 to 22 inches of snow and winds gusting to 35 mph in places. Blizzard warnings are in places for areas east and south of Fort Lupton, though Fort Lupton is not included. Forecasters say those with travel plans should consider delaying travel until sometime Saturday when the storm ends.

No classes mean no extracurricular activities as well. Weld County government offices in Greeley also shut their doors Friday.
