Thornton City Council unanimously approved the conceptual site plan for a five-building retail space in north Thornton.
The plan is for the seven-acre parcel on the northeast corner of 144th Avenue and York Street to house boutique-style restaurants and shops, said developer representative Max Gansline at a May 25 council meeting. It will be walkable, shops will have outdoor patios and plazas, and it will connect to the area’s trail system. Buildings won’t exceed 30 feet in height.
Council held a public hearing for the conceptual site plan, but no public commenters were present. Councilors had almost no complaints as well.
Mayor Pro Tem Jessica Sandgren said the plan is unique because it’s a walk-able retail space next to a neighborhood. “I think this is something we have wanted to see for a while … I hope we see more of this development,” she said.
The Staenberg Group, the developer, isn’t exactly sure which business will go there yet, Gansline said. The firm wants to tailor the businesses to area residents and the COVID-19 pandemic changed earlier predictions of who is moving into the area.
Mayor Jan Kulmann said she lives in the neighborhood and often walks by the bare land that currently is there. She said, “It’s been one of those things the neighborhood has talked about for years … So it’s nice to see a very quality presentation, a very quality product.”
