FREDERICK — Frederick baseball coach Ted Clapp thought his defense and his pitching staff would be solid in 2015. But he also was looking at the potential of extra power in the Warriors’ lineup this spring.

All Frederick did was score 26 runs in its first two games of the season.

Clapp has his eyes on contributions from four juniors: Justin Smith, Dalton Nelson, Spencer Truitt and Evan Prestwich. The big sticks belong to Smith and Nelson.

“They are coming in with some extra power this year,” Clapp said. “We don’t plan on reworking anything. When (Michael) Broz and (Ryan) Cawthra left, the new players just rolled right in. The seniors just get bigger and stronger each year.”

Clapp’s list of seniors includes Eric Worley, Lane Hiser, Brandon Zuniga, who returns after a season-ending hip injury last year, Trystin Montano, Cameron Muncy and Matt Entrekin.

“We’ve got a good, solid group,” Clapp said. “They played together all summer. We were able to keep the team together during the summer, and we had a great summer. The experience and the chemistry are coming together. We’re going to pick up where we left off during the summer.

Frederick opened up the season against Delta, which had a record of 17-2 last season and qualified for the playoffs. The Panthers won the game 14-11 March 7. The Warriors rallied late for 15-8 win over Montezuma-Cortez March 7. FHS heads for Pueblo Central (8-11 a year ago) for a 4 p.m. game March 11.

“We should be a good, solid ball club,” Clapp said. “Our strength in the lineup is going to be an asset. We’re going to focus on hitting the ball up the middle. If they hit it out, more power to them.”
