Players from the last 44 years of Bluedevil basketball gathered Friday at Fort Lupton High School to kick-off a new tradition, bring the community together… and to just have some fun.
There was a light-hearted, jovial mood at the FLHS Boy’s basketball 2010 alumni game as players, who might be separated by decades from their peak physical shape, displayed that time had not dulled their love for their sport.
The alumni were split into evenly-matched blue and white teams. And while both teams played hard, the fouls were few and light in nature. Opponents helped each other up after an accidental shove, smiling and laughing about a wayward drive to the net.
Tom Crawford, who graduated from FLHS in 1966, said he enjoyed the game and he hoped it would become an annual tradition.
“This was a lot of fun,” Crawford said. “It’s great to see people you haven’t seen in a while and enjoy the nostalgia.”
The white team emerged victorious with a score of 46 to 40, but Kerry Brunton, who coached the blue team was all smiles after the game as he shook hands with his opponents.
“It was great to bring the guys who played in the past together tonight,” Brunton said.
Brunton, who is now the FLHS athletic director, felt the game also provided a good example for the current boys basketball team, which conducted their own game later that night to compete for spots on the varsity squad.
“We got to show the young guys that there is a basketball tradition here,” Brunton said.
The night also honored the top players going back as to Fort Lupton’s first all-state selection in 1929.
Playing for the white team, Michael McMillan, who graduated in 1994, holds the FLHS record for most 3-point field goals, most assists and second-most steals.
Robbie Sepulveda and Eric Reckard, playing for the blue team, were members of the all-state team in 1996 and 1997, respectively.
