HUDSON — Crews continued working Monday, March 23, to clear a railway near Hudson after a 120-car Burlington Northern Santa Fe train derailed Sunday, March 22.
Emergency crews were called early Sunday morning to the area about a half-mile west of state Highway 52. Upon arrival, they found that more than 20 rail cars from the BNSF freight train had jumped the rails. Those cars — containing many tons of coal — spilled in the immediate vicinity.
While no one was injured in the derailment, responders to the derailment — including the Colorado State Patrol, local firefighters and more — caused many delays along Interstate 76 on Sunday, prompting Colorado Department of Transportation officials to use their variable message signs along that stretch of interstate to remind motorists to not stop and to keep traffic moving.
Regulators with the Federal Railroad Administration are investigating the cause of the derailment. No word on what caused the cars to jump the rails had been made as of press time.
