Brighton City Council is expected to take up the question of placing a marijuana sales tax question on the November election ballot.
Council's discussion is set to start at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, at City Hall, 500 S. Fourth Ave. If council approves, voters will get to decide whether to OK the tax Nov. 2.
According to a city press release, the ballot for marijuana sales would allow for the sale of retail marijuana and marijuana products within city limits. In addition, the ballot question asks voters if they approve of a 4 percent sales tax on
marijuana and marijuana products sold at retail stores in Brighton.
City staff estimate that approximately $1.5 million of marijuana sales tax could be collected per year. Revenue from this special
sales tax would be used to fund capital projects, such as recreational amenities, according to the press release. No more than 20 percent of the revenues could be spent on administrative costs.
Because of the Taxpayers Bill of Rights, Under TABOR, the city has to get voter approval to impose the marijuana sales tax..
Voters in Fort Lupton approved the sale of medical and retail marijuana in November.
