    LAKEWOOD – The good news for Frederick’s Michela Hewitt was qualifying for two events on the last day of the state 4A track-and-field meet May 18 at Jeffco Stadium.

                The bad news was she had to run her 400-meter finals, then compete in the triple jump in almost back-to-back fashion.

               LAKEWOOD – Frederick’s Ryan Chacon was happy with his first performance at the state 4A track-and-field meet at Jeffco Stadium.

                His debut appearance netted him an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (50.85 seconds_ and a ninth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.99 seconds). He also helped the 4-by-400 relay team to a 13th-place finish in a time of 3:30.29.

    FREDERICK -- A half-dozen Frederick High School athletes chose their colleges and signed their athletic letters of intent May 15 at the school.

    LAKEWOOD – Fort Lupton's Antonio Marquez is no stranger to the state cross country meet. He's been there all three years he's been in high school.

    This year, he added the state 3A track meet to his resumé. Marquez finished 15th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.31.

  • And now, two baseball teams wait

    THORNTON -- Fort Lupton and Riverdale Ridge high schools played the last regular season baseball game of the year May 13.

    Afterward, both teams entered the world of state rankings and strength of schedule to see whether either would make the state 3A district playoffs, which start Friday, May 17.

    Fort Lupton entered the game as the 32nd team in the Colorado High School Activities Association RPI poll, the poll that determines the top 32 teams to qualify for postseason. Riverdale Ridge was 35th in that same poll.

    Track/field

    LONGMONT – Fort Lupton's Antonio Marquez turned in a season-best time of 1:58.73 in the 800-meter run at the St. Vrain Invitational meet May 11.

    Marquez finished seventh in the field.

    The top finisher for the girls team was Melia Coleman. She was 43rd in the 300-meter hurdles, where her time was 52.89 seconds.

    Conifer took a doubleheader from Fort Lupton by scores of 9-3 and 11-0 May 11.

    LONGMONT – Frederick's Michela Hewitt finished second in the 800-meter run at the John Martin Invite in fort Collins May 10. Her season-best time was 2:18.97. Hewitt also finished second in the triple jump (36 feet 3 inches, tops so far this spring), and she placed fifth in the long jump with a sesason-best distance of 16 feet 5 inches.
