Tornadoes touch down near Fort Lupton

Two tornadoes and perhaps a third touched down east of Fort Lupton May 27, part of a series of tornadoes and general severe weather that hit the area for a second day in a row.


One tornado touched down a mile south of Lochbuie, which is about six 10 miles east of Fort Lupton, according to a trained National Weather Service spotter. The spotter described the storm as "weak," though it stayed on the ground for five minutes in open space. No damage or injuries were reported.


A storm chaser reported a tornado touched down near Hudson, about 9 1/2 miles east of Fort Lupton It, too, was weak, according to a National Weather Service report. No damage or injuries were reported.


Witnesses reported a tornado touched down along I-76 near Lochbuie. There were no reports of damage from this tornado.


Hail and tornadoes dotted the landscape from near Watkins as far as east as Phillips County. The largest hail -- 2 1/2 inches in diameter -- was reported near Holyoke in Phillips County. Most of the tornadoes touched down in open fields.
