Here we go again .. blizzard hits region

-A A +A

It's déja vu all over again.

Another major storm is due to hit the area this afternoon and tonight. Blizzard conditions are expected later in the afternoon through Thursday morning, so authorities are discouraging travel. The Colorado State Patrol closed I-76 in both directions from Lochbuie to the Nebraska line at midafternoon.

Fort Lupton and Frederick high schools called off all extracurricular activities for this afternoon and tonight. Front Range Community College closed its Brighton campus early. Aims Community College closed all its campuses, including the one in Fort Lupton, at midafternoon.

We suspect more closures will come during the day.

The American Red Cross offered some safety tips to deal with the storm. Heat your home safely. Keep a proper area around space heaters free from obstacles. Place it on a hard, level, non-flammable surface, such as a ceramic tile floor. Don't leave fireplaces unattended in the fire place. Don't use a cooking range or oven to heat your house. Turn off portable space heaters when you leave a room or go to sleep.

As for clothing, wear layers. Be careful when shoveling snow in cold temperatures. Check on the elderly and people living alone. Bring your pets inside.

Authorities are discouraging travel. But if you have to, wear your seat belt. Don't follow too closely. Don't use cruise control. Don't pass snow plows.

We'll update later.
