Fort Lupton wrestler Jacob Duran admitted to surprise at his success at the recent AAU Wrestling Scholastic Duals tournament in Florida.

He earned all-American honors and a gold medal. He won all 10 matches. Seven were by pinfall. Two were technical falls (decisions of 15 or more points) and one came by way of a major decision.

So what was the basis of surprise?

“I went to Florida with an open mindset,” said the FLHS junior. “I didn’t know how the competition was going to be out there. II was nervous because I was wrestling up in weight (132 pounds), and I ended up catching food poisoning the first day I was out there.”

That pushed him into the 123-pound bracket. Vision Quest sent several area wrestlers to the tournament.

Duran took third place at the 2018 state wrestling tournament. He lost in the quarterfinals, then rolled through the consolation bracket. In 2017, he won a state title as a freshman.

“All this wrestling over the summer helps me critique my own wrestling,” Duran said. “So by winter, nobody will be able to stop me. Overall, I had a blast. I’m proud, but this is just the beginning for me.”
