The annual 9Health Fair in Fort Lupton helps ensure that anyone and everyone gets the chance to receive medical services essential to their well-being, organizers say.

“You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by doing it,” said Margi Albert of Hudson, a participant. “It kind of covers everything, and it’s so great.”

Albert has attended the annual 9Health Fair for the last 10 years. The main incentive, she said, is the affordable costs for health checkups.

“It gets you to do it,” Albert said. “They make it so easy anymore.”

Several health services were available at the fair – most of them free - including dentistry, vision, hearing, diabetes tests, skin screenings, and free prostate, breast and Pap smear exams.

What did participants have to pay for? Blood tests cost money - the fee was $35 for a full blood chemistry screening.

“It’s a complete way to come in and get your health checked,” said Perry Bell, site coordinator for the Fort Lupton 9Health Fair.

“There’s got to be a service for people who can’t afford it,” said Bell. “This is the one time of year when we can reach to those people.”

About 420 people attended last year’s 9Health Fair in Fort Lupton, according to 9Health. The Fort Lupton Lions Club originally started the annual health fair around 38 years ago, Bell said. Eventually, 9Health contacted the Lions Club, and the health fair has been under the 9Health umbrella ever since.

Bell recently took over as site coordinator. His predecessor, Dave Furisho, ran the 9Health Fair for 35 years. Last year, Bell said a couple approached Furisho on the street and told him that what the couple had found out at the health fair saved their lives.

“Just to hear that person say that – we’ve saved a person’s life at the health fair – we’re good for the next 100 years,” Bell said.
