Weld sheriff: Man's death near Hudson is a homicide

HUDSON -- Authorities identified the man whose body was found near Interstate 76 and Weld County Road 12 1/2 Wednesday morning.

 

The man was 41-year-old Joseph Peters, and Weld County sheriff's detectives are treating the case as a homicide.

Two employees of the Farmers Reservoir and Irrigation Co. found Peters' body wrapped in a blue tarp shortly before 8:30 a.m. The area is just north of state Highway 52. Weld County sheriff's deputy Tim Schwartz said Peters had been shot to death.

HUDSON — Questions are popping up regarding the future of a prison in Hudson and the inmates housed there.

Weather service posts fire weather watch for Friday

DENVER -- The National Weather Service posted a fire weather watch for Adams and Weld counties for Friday afternoon and evening.

The cause is twofold. Strong winds, which mean very warm temperatures, and low relative humidities, could create extreme fire conditions, especially after noon. Winds could be as strong as 20 miles per hour with gusts as high as 30 mph. The relative humidity levels could be as low as 9 percent.

Police looking for robbery suspect

The Fort Lupton Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying suspects wanted in connection with a robbery at the Diamond Shamrock at 101 Denver Ave.

 

         On May 14 at approximately 3 a.m., four suspects entered the store and split up while inside. Two suspects walked towards the drink cooler, while two stood near the cash register. One of the two female suspects said, “Give me all the money.” The clerk, surprised by the demand, asked the suspect what she said. The suspect repeated by saying, “Give me the money or I’ll hurt you.” The clerk handed over an undisclosed sum. The suspects left the store and were last seen northbound in the alley.

         The suspects, two males and two females, were wearing dark jeans and dark-colored hoodies. All are believed to be in their late teens to early 20s. No weapons were reportedly seen during the robbery.

Rep. Jerry Sonnenberg’s House Bill 1356 blazed across the legislative sky last week, a shooting star destined to vaporize on reentry. It did, but not before the fragments landed on Sonnenberg’s head.
    As proposed, the bill would have withheld mining and energy-related severance tax revenues for local governments that “in any way restricted or delayed the ability of an oil and gas producer to exercise its rights to extract oil and gas.”

Charlotte McMillian Koch

    Charlotte McMillian Koch, 70, died December 19, 2011, in care of hospice after suffering with colon cancer since 2007. Charlotte was born May 15, 1941, the second of a set of twins at Rullison, Colo. She moved with her family to Cañon City in 1950. She graduated high school in 1959 and moved to Denver to be with her sister and family.

Johns ties for sixth in state 4A long jump

LAKEWOOD -- Fort Lupton's Cicero Johns, who didn't qualify for the state 4A high jump until the last meet of the season, finished tied for sixth Friday afternoon at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood.

 

Johns, who is a junior, cleared 6 feet 2 inches but could not get over the bar at 6 feet 3 inches. He tied with
Longmont's Landon Stetson.

Presidential campaign comes to Fort Lupton

FORT LUPTON — If GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney came to South Weld County May 9 looking for the Hispanic vote, he missed his mark.
    What Romney did find on the K.P. Kauffman Co. well site in Fort Lupton was a largely white, blue-collar crowd heavily represented by oil workers, farmers and local politicians.

Home sales drop in Fort Lupton

    Home sales dropped significantly in April, according to MLS figures (Metrolist and IRES) supplied by Greg Zadel Realty in Firestone.
    Just three homes changed hands in April as opposed to 13 in March. The homes that sold stayed in the market for 16 days as compared with 103 days in March. The average sale price was 101 percent of the listed price when they went under contract. A month before, that figure was 99 percent.
