FORT LUPTON — Fort Lupton’s Francesca Watson has one more piece of high school basketball business on her plate, and it comes up this weekend.
She is part of the Colorado High School Coaches Association all-state girls basketball game at Adams State University in Alamosa. Play begins at 9 a.m. June 14, and the finals are at 3 p.m.
“I will be getting there on June 12 for check in,” she said. “I think we may have practice that day as well. I’m not sure. Friday we have a banquet.”
Watson also played in the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports all-star game in March.
“I have a little bit of an idea what I’m walking into from experience from the other state game I was in,” she said. “I just been practicing and helping the high school girls.”
Watson, who just graduated from high school, was an all-Colorado 7 League choice this season. She was the only FLHS player to be so honored. Watson averaged 16 points and two rebounds a game in her senior season. She was the only player to average in double figures for the Bluedevils. They went 6-14 this season. Watson made 34 percent of her field-goal attempts and 32 percent of her 3-pointers.
“I’m just ready for this weekend to come up,” she said. “I’m excited because its a bittersweet feeling knowing this will be my last basketball game I play. I know it’s going to be a fun game. I am truly blessed to have gotten this opportunity to play in the state game.”
Fort Lupton’s D.J. Vurciaga is scheduled to compete in wrestling at the all-state games. That begins at 1:30 p.m. June 14.
