The Weld County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse is embarking on a journey to National Peace Officers Memorial Week in May in Washington, D. C.
The mounted unit will be honoring the six law enforcement officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their communities in Colorado during 2012. Colorado had the third-highest rate in the nation for deaths in the line of duty for 2012.
The Weld County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse has 58 members, 16 of those members have met the criteria to travel east with their horses to Washington, D. C., to participate in the candlelight vigil and the Peace Officers Memorial the week of May 15. Each member has personally contributed $500 to be donated to the National Peace Officers Memorial. Weld County would be the first law enforcement agency from the Western United States to actively participate with their horses.
Weld County knows only too directly the pain and suffering an agency and community experience with the loss of a peace officer, a peer and a friend with the death of Deputy Sam Brownlee in November of 2010.
The members need your assistance to make this happen. The expense for this trip is $70,000. Contributions can be made online at http://wcsoposse-inhonorofourbest.org. Checks can be made out to the Sheriff’s Posse and mailed to Weld County Sheriff’s Office, 1950 “O” St, Greeley CO 80631 attention Commander (Retired) Margie Martinez Perusek.
