FORT LUPTON – Fort Lupton Police Chief Ken Poncelow said speed was a factor in an early morning car crash that took the life of one teen and seriously injured three others.

Poncelow said one teen died and three others were rushed to nearby hospitals after the Pontiac G8 sedan they were in “was going way, way too fast” and crashed into a commercial van at about 2 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, outside the House of Smoke at the intersection of Ninth Street and Denver Avenue along Fort Lupton’s downtown district.

Poncelow said the ages of the four boys in the vehicle — three from Fort Lupton and one from Brighton — ranged from 12 to 16. The names of the four boys had not yet been released as of press time, but Poncelow said the deceased was a 14-year-old passenger.

One teen was taken by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Aurora, and another was transported to the same hospital via ambulance. The third teen was taken to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Poncelow said.

According to police, investigators determined the vehicle was traveling southbound on Denver Avenue at speeds of 70 to 80 mph when the 16-year-old driver attempted to make a turn onto Ninth Street. Police say the vehicle was going too fast to make the turn and instead went into a spin before colliding with a commercial van.

“A crash like this is never a good thing,” Poncelow said.

The boys were trapped in the vehicle following the crash and had to be extricated by emergency personnel, according to reports.

By law, the 16-year-old driver may have had too many passengers in the vehicle. Colorado law prohibits any teen driver from having more than one person under the age of 21 in their vehicle unless those passengers are siblings.

There will be a commnuity vigil at 7 this evening at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Lupton (306 Park Ave.) to pray for the victims of the crash, their families, their friends and the Fort Lupton community. All are welcome.
