FORT LUPTON — The city’s Nov. 5 election is on the political horizon officially as candidates are sought to file for mayor and council members for Ward I, Ward II and Ward III.
The current terms of the following will terminate in November 2013: Mayor – Tommy Holton; Councilmembers Ward I – Kevin Schwickrath; Ward II – Zo Hubbard; Ward III – Bob McWillams.
The mayor serves a four-year term and is elected at-large by all registered electors residing in the city.
Council members serve a four-year term and are elected by registered electors within their respective wards.
Persons interested in being a candidate for mayor or councilmember must meet the following requirements:
1. Be a registered elector.
2. Be at least 18 years of age on the date of the election.
3. Must have resided within the city of Fort Lupton for at least (twelve) 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the date of the election.
Candidates shall be nominated by petition without regard to political party affiliation. Forms may be obtained from the office of the city clerk at 130 S. McKinley Ave. Nomination petitions for this election may be picked up from the city clerk’s office on or after Aug. 6, 2013 and must be filed with the city clerk no later than 5:00 p.m., Aug. 26, 2013.
Candidates for the position of mayor must have at least 25 signatures of registered electors residing within the city’s boundaries.
Candidates for city council must have at least 25 signatures of registered electors residing in the candidate’s ward.
No registered elector shall sign more than one nomination petition for the council position within their ward; signing a petition for a council member candidate will not prohibit that elector from also signing a petition for one mayor candidate.
