Fort Lupton’s Joey Montes likes the 3-point shot.

“I practice that every night,” he said after he made five of the long-range shots in a 67-46 win over Prospect Ridge Academy Dec. 1. “It’s what motivates me.”

The practice routine is comparable to a game of “around the world.”

“I usually make five from each spot, the corner, the wing, up top,” Montes said. “I keep doing that over and over and over again. That’s how it is. During practice, I take at least 20 shots. I shoot a lot. Shooting is my thing.”

Montes, who finished with 21 points, wasn’t the only one firing away from downtown. Eli Mullet added three treys among his 12 points. Iram Quezada tossed in two from beyond the arc and finished with eight points. Hayden Fells came off the bench in the fourth quarter, added a trey and finished with seven points.

Montes’ coach, Jim Roedel, liked the way his team played defense.

“What we talked about in the pregame about was from game 1 to game 2, I wanted to see the intensity on the defensive end match the offensive intensity,” Roedel said. “It was a pretty complete game. We shot the ball well. We had 12 turnovers in the first half. So if I had to pick on one thing, it would be the 12 turnovers in the first half. We made the correction in the second half and took care of the ball and pulled away.”

“We were positive,” Montes said. “I knew we were a good team from the beginning. We are motivated players. We motivate each other to be better. Our players are unselfish. We love sharing the ball.”

“The defensive side wasn’t there the first night (a 76-64 win against Eagle Ridge Academy Nov. 29),” Roedel said. “The offense was a repeat, so if we can continue to repeat that, that’s fine. I was most impressed we made that (defensive) adjustment in one day.”
